The grip is the only point of contact with the golf club

Golf gripsThe grip connects the player to the golf club and so is of major importance to the feel and playability of the club. Deterioration of a grip is very gradual and mainly goes unnoticed.

Worn grips will slip in your hands leading to miss hits. This may lead to overcompensating by gripping tighter to stop the slipping, putting unwanted tension in the swing that results in even more miss hits and loss of distance.

Grips weights vary significantly, changing the swing weight and the feel of the club once fitted. If you have golf clubs with particularly high or low swing weights the wrong grip could render them unplayable.

A grip that is too large creates tension in the arms and upper body restricting the correct hand action (release) resulting in an open face at impact.

A grip that is too small can cause the player to grip too tightly again causing tension in the swing and may result in over-active hand action resulting in a closed club face.

Hard and cord type grips have long been the preference of the pro and the better player. They work much better in wet weather and humid conditions and come as standard on most golf clubs. Many amateurs would benefit from the comfort and tackiness of a softer grip.

If you play once or twice a week, you should replace your grips about every 12 months or so, or even sooner if signs of wear and tear are showing. If you apply quite a lot of pressure when gripping the clubs you may need to replace them more often than that! Some golfers change their grips three to four times a year as they realise what a difference it can make to their game. Padraig Harrington has his grips changed almost every week!

The Putter

Putter gripsPutter grips are equally important for comfort and size, but alignment is critical. A square putt can only be achieved with a square putter head to the grip.

The Two Thumb Putter grip helps.

This simple but effective design is brought to you by Philip H. Gazeley, putting coach on the European Tour.

By allowing both hands to sit comfortably side by side, this

  • helps square your shoulders and ensure they stay level
  • helps your body stay in line
  • helps ensure there is no shoulder moving back and up
  • helps the putter face to stay much nearer to square on the back stroke
  • helps the putter face to retain this squareness through the impact area

All of this leads to more accurate putting and gives you the confidence in your putting that you always wished for.

An independent study conducted by Loughborough University's Sports Technology Institute has concluded that the 2Thumb Putter Grip promotes a pendulum-like putting stroke. This is better than conventional style grips. Take a look at the video to find out more
